Why watches need servicing
A mechanical watch contains more than a hundred moving parts that run on tiny amounts of oil. Over the years, oils thicken and dry, gaskets harden and parts wear. A full service – often called an overhaul – means taking the movement apart, cleaning every part, replacing worn components, re-oiling, regulating the timekeeping and testing water resistance. Skipping service for too long increases wear and can turn a routine service into an expensive repair.
How often?
Most manufacturers now recommend servicing a modern mechanical watch every 5 – 10 years, thanks to better oils and materials. Chronographs and complicated watches often need attention a little sooner. Quartz watches need a new battery every 2 – 3 years and a full service with new gaskets every 8 – 10 years. Signs that service is due include losing or gaining much more than usual, a shorter power reserve, a stiff or gritty crown, or condensation under the crystal.
Typical service prices
| Movement | Independent watchmaker | Brand service center |
| Quartz full service | $120 – $200 | $200 – $400 |
| Automatic, time & date | $250 – $450 | $450 – $900 |
| Chronograph | $400 – $700 | $700 – $1,400 |
| Complications (GMT, annual calendar) | $600 – $1,000 | $1,000 – $2,500 |
| Perpetual calendar, tourbillon | $1,500+ | $3,000 – $10,000+ |
Prices for high-end brands are higher; replacement crystals, dials, hands or bracelets cost extra.
Brand service or independent watchmaker?
Brand service centers use genuine parts, restore the case and bracelet to factory finish and usually offer a two-year warranty. They take longer and cost more, and may replace original vintage parts such as dials and hands – ask for originals back. Independent watchmakers can be significantly cheaper and faster and are often preferred for vintage watches, but not all can get parts for every modern movement. Look for certifications and reviews.
Keep service costs down
- Have water resistance tested yearly if you swim with your watch – a failed gasket is cheap; a flooded movement is not.
- Avoid magnetic fields (speakers, laptop lids, bag clasps). Demagnetizing is quick and inexpensive.
- Don't operate chronograph pushers or set the date underwater, or set the date between about 9 pm and 3 am on many movements.
- Keep the service papers – a documented service history helps resale value.
- Budget for service when buying: it's part of the real cost of owning a mechanical watch.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a mechanical watch be serviced?
Most brands now recommend every 5 – 10 years. Chronographs and complicated watches may need service closer to every 5 years.
How much does a watch service cost?
An automatic time-and-date watch typically costs $250 – $450 at an independent watchmaker and $450 – $900 or more at a luxury brand's service center.
What happens if I never service my watch?
Old oils stop lubricating, parts wear and timekeeping deteriorates. Eventually the watch may stop and need expensive parts replaced.
Is it cheaper to service a watch at an independent?
Usually 30 – 50 % cheaper, but make sure the watchmaker can source genuine parts and offers a warranty.
How often does a quartz watch need a battery?
Every 2 – 3 years for most analog quartz watches; a full service with new gaskets every 8 – 10 years.
About ServiceDial
ServiceDial is an independent, free calculator for estimating the maintenance costs of mechanical and quartz watches. Prices are typical US ranges and vary by brand, model and region; always ask for a written quote. We are not a watchmaker, retailer or manufacturer.
Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.
The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
